The metro is the fastest way around big Russian cities — and famously grand in Moscow. Buying a ride and finding your way takes just a handful of phrases.
- Здравствуйте. — ZDRAST-vuy-tye — Hello (polite).
- Одну поездку, пожалуйста. — ahd-NOO pah-YEST-koo, pah-ZHAH-luy-sta — One ride, please.
- Где станция метро? — gdye STAHN-tsee-ya me-TRO — Where is the metro station?
- Как пройти к…? — kak pray-TEE k — How do I get to…?
- Извините. — eez-vee-NEE-tye — Excuse me / Sorry.
- Осторожно, двери закрываются. — as-ta-ROZH-na, DVYE-ree za-kry-VA-yut-sa — "Careful, the doors are closing" — the classic announcement at every stop.
- Спасибо. — spa-SEE-ba — Thank you.
Recognising that door announcement alone will make you feel like a local. Learn these, then practise with a Russian speaker so the sounds — and that rolling "р" — start to feel familiar.
