Copenhagen is the home of hygge — cosy, easy and effortlessly stylish, best explored by bike like every local. Danes speak superb English, but a "tak" (thanks) is always welcome.

  • Nyhavn — the postcard harbour of candy-coloured townhouses and old sailing boats. Touristy and gorgeous; grab an ice cream and walk the quay rather than paying canal-side prices.
  • Tivoli Gardens — one of the world's oldest amusement parks, all fairy lights and old-world charm in the middle of the city. Said to have inspired Walt Disney.
  • Rosenborg Castle — a Renaissance royal castle in the King's Garden, housing the crown jewels. Small, beautiful and surrounded by the city's favourite picnic lawn.
  • Christiania — the self-governing "freetown", an alternative community of murals, workshops and gardens. Respect the local rules and no-photo zones.
  • The harbour baths & a bike ride — the water's so clean you can swim in the middle of the city. Rent a bike, cross the bridges, and be a Copenhagener for a day.

Danish pronunciation is famously slippery, but "tak" and "skål!" (cheers!) are easy wins. Find a Danish speaker below and get a friendly head start on the sounds.
